about

Sunflowers Face The Sun is the first album from Ailie Ormston and Finlay Clark.

Taking inspiration from Anni Albers’ methodologies in textile making, Clark recorded a collection of improvisations from which Ormston has constructed new compositions by sampling, restructuring and altering the initial material.

Recorded with just a dictaphone on an out of tune piano in a tenement flat, the brooding melodies maintain a sense of delicate intimacy and playfulness in tandem with the tactile sounds of the wooden chair and piano hammers. Elements of the melodies, Clark’s playing style, and environmental sounds within the room have been amplified, distorted, repeated, chopped and patched together by Ormston, with an intention to preserve the nature of the recordings in parts and completely abstract them in others. The twelve compositions demonstrate an intrigue in making and unmaking, as well as pairing processed and unprocessed sounds – these concepts formed the basis of discussion between Clark and Ormston in the early stages of collaboration, and subsequently acted as an initial agenda to stray from and return to in the production of the album.

The album has been transposed – or translated – to sheet music for string quartet as its final iteration. The transference of sound from piano improvisation, to production in digital software, to scored sheet music, illustrates a way of thinking about music as a material to be reconstructed in different contexts which is integral to both Ormston and Clark’s interdisciplinary practices.
